Brazil 1733-M 800 reis
The first specimen was lot 23267 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "João V gold 800 Reis 1733/28-M, F12 NGC. Quite pleasant fields for the grade. Interesting overdate which in our opinion i[s] 1733/28 (NGC labelled 33 over 29). Scarce. From The RLM Collection." The second specimen was lot 23268 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $11,750. The catalog description[1] noted, "A João V gold Jewel João V gold 800 Reis 1733/2-M, MS61 NGC, full wide rims, near perfect strike with partial luster. Light adjustment mark. Early 18th gold minors circulated heavily in Brazil, Portugal and elsewhere for around a century and 800, 1600 and 3200 Reis are usually found in about very fine often with problems. A specimen in mint state condition with full original surfaces is the very definition of condition rarity. A wonderful piece. From The RLM Collection." This type was struck in Minas Gerais 1727-34 and in Rio in 1727-30 and in Bahia 1727-50. Despite the three active mints and the many dates in the catalog, this type is very seldom seen.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.79 g, 0.917 fine gold, .053 oz AGW.
Catalog reference: KM 120, Russo-262, Gomes-114.08 (first) and Gomes-type of 114 (second).
