UBS sale 85, lot 242

This specimen was lot 242 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Brandenburg-Preussen, Markgrafschaft, 1417 Kurfürstentum, 1701 Königreich, Friedrich III. (I.), 1688-1713, 2/3 Taler 1692. Geharnischtes Brustbild nach rechts. Rv. Gekröntes Wappen, unten die Wertzahl in Perlklammern. Sehr schön." (Electorate of Brandenburg, Frederick III, 1688-1713, 2/3 thaler of 1692. Armored bust to right; reverse: crowned arms, denomination below in cartouche of pearls. Very Fine.)

The type was struck at Magdeburg (KM 557), Berlin (KM 556) and Minden (KM 576) 1689-95 in large enough quantities that it is fairly reasonable today. The SCWC notes that 2/3 thaler equaled one gulden. The elector was elevated to king of Prussia in 1701.

Recorded mintage: 2,101,000 for 1691-92.

Specification: silver, this specimen 17,16 g.

Catalog reference: von Schrötter 116, Dav-270, KM C224.
