Brandenburg-Franconia 1603 thaler Dav-6224
This specimen was lot 236 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,752 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"BRANDENBURG IN FRANKEN. Georg Friedrich, 1557-1603. Reichstaler 1603, Nürnberg, auf seinen Tod am 5. Mai. Slg. Grüber (Auktion Künker 267) 3436. RR Rand und Felder bearbeitet, sehr schön. (margraviate of Brandenburg, George Frederick, 1557-1603, thaler of 1603, Nuremburg mint, on his death on May 5. Rare, tooled on edge and fields, very fine.)"
We have listed this thaler as "Brandenburg-Franconia" as the margrave seems to have temporarily united Brandenburg-Ansbach and Brandenburg-Bayreuth. The two margraviates were permanently united in the 1760's and are today part of Bavaria.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
