Jean Elsen sale 149, lot 826

This specimen was lot 826 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €1,900 (about US$2,573 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Charles III (1703-1711), prétendant au trône d'Espagne, AR patagon, 1710, Anvers. Légende CAROLVS. Tranche cordée. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, accostée du monogramme royal, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or. R/ Ecu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Très rare. Très Beau à Superbe. (duchy of Brabant, pretender Charles III, 1703-11, silver patagon of 1710, Antwerp mint, "CAROLVS" in the legend, reeded edge. Obverse: Burgundian cross below a crown, crowned monograms to left and right, decorated with the jewels of the Golden Fleece; reverse: crowned arms, Order of the Golden Fleece around. Very rare, Very Fine - Extremely Fine.)"

This rare type was struck 1706-10 during the War of the Spanish Succession with 1709 being the most available date. Charles failed in his attempt to seize the Spanish throne but was bought off with Belgium (including Brabant) and Spanish Italy. He ruled Austria until his death in 1740 but struck very little coinage for the Austrian Netherlands.
