Jean Elsen sale 163, lot 1090
JE163-1090r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1090 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €380 (about US$439 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BRABANT, Duché, Philippe V (1700-1712), AR escalin, 1705, Anvers. D/ Lion deb. à g., ten. une épée et l'écu ovale d'Autriche-Bourgogne. R/ Ecu couronné sur une croix de Bourgogne. Très rare. (duchy of Brabant, Philip V, 1700-12, silver escalin of 1705, Antwerp mint. Obverse: lion rampant left, brandishing a sword and the arms of Austria-Burgundy; reverse: crowned arms over a Burgundian cross. Very rare, very Fine.)

These patagons were issued from Antwerp (hand mintmark, shown here) 1704-06 but all dates are rare. It is unlikely that Philip V, in whose name these coins were issued, ever ruled in the Spanish Netherlands as they were promptly occupied by Louis XIV's troops and then fought over by those troops and the Duke of Marlborough. By the Treaty of Utrecht (1715) they were turned over to the Austrians and passed from Spanish rule. Coinage for the region ceased until 1749 except for a few patterns.

Recorded mintage: 160,043 for 1704-05.

Specification: 5.26 g, 0.582 fine silver, this specimen is 5,19 g.

Catalog reference: KM 119.3, G.H. 368-1; W. 1098; VH 741.
