Bozzolo 1639 ducatone Dav-3857
This specimen was lot 7 in Numismatica Ars Classica Auction 85 (Milan, May 2015) where it sold for 17,000 EUR (about US$22,744 including buyer's fees). The lot description noted,
"Bozzolo, Scipione Gonzaga, 1609-1670. III periodo: duca di Sabbioneta 1636-1670. Ducatone 1639, AR . SCIP D G DVX SABL S R I BOZ PRI Έ C. Busto barbuto a sin. Rv. TV ES PETRVS – PRAESIDIVM NOSTRVM S. Pietro riceve le chiavi da Cristo; all'esergo, MDCXXXIX. Rarissimo. Lievi mancanze di metallo, altrimenti q.Spl. Acquistato privatamente da Ratto Numismatica nel gennaio 1982. Conio di Gaspare Mola. (principality of Bozzolo, Scipione Gonzaga, 1609-70, third period as duke of Sabbioneta, 1636-70, ducatone of 1639. Obverse: bearded bust left; reverse: St. Peter receives the keys from Christ, date in exergue. Extremely rare, some drill marks on the reverse, otherwise about extremely fine. Dies by Gaspare Mola.)"
Bozzolo was a principality in the west of the duchy of Mantua likely granted to junior members of the ruling Gonzaga family. Scipione was the last to issue coins; the mint was closed on his death in 1670.
