Jean Elsen sale 134, lot 1225

This specimen was lot 1225 in Jean Elsen sale 134 (Brussels, September 2017), where it sold for €1,700 (about US$3,139 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BOUILLON ET SEDAN, Henri de la Tour d'Auvergne (1591-1623), AR demi-écu de 15 sols, 1613, Sedan. D/ Aigle éployée portant l'écu au sanglier sur la poitrine. En dessous, 1613- XV. R/ Ecu écartelé de la Tour, Auvergne et Turenne, Boulogne en coeur, dans un cartouche orné, sous une couronne. Extrêmement rare Légère défaut de flan. Belle patine. Très Beau. (duchy of Bouillon and Sedan, Henry de la Tour, 1591-1623, silver half écu of fifteen sols of 1613, Sedan mint. Obverse: eagle displayed supporting a shield with a boar, date below; reverse: quartered arms of de la Tour, Auvergne, Turenne and Boulogne, crown above. Extremely rare, planchet defect, nice toning, very fine.)"

This type is listed in the SCWC for 1613-14, along with a double liard, and Dav-3816, -3817, -3818 (ecu of 30 sols) and -3819, -3820, -3821 (ecu of 45 sols). The SCWC lists this duchy under French states as the area was annexed by Louis XIV in 1678 and permanently added to France but we list this with the Bishopric of Liege which had suzerainty in the early 1600's.
