Bombay (1803-24) 1/3 mohur Fr-1561
This specimen was lot 1162 in CNG sale Triton XXVII (New York, January 2024), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA, Colonial. British India. Bombay Presidency. 1662-1835. AV Panchia – Third Mohur. Surat mint, but struck at Bombay. Dated RY 4[6] of Shah Alam II (Struck 1825-1831). [sikka mubara]/k [ba]dshah gh[az]/i/[shah alam] (the auspicious coin of the victorious emperor Shah Alam); privy mark 5 above shah / z[arb surat sanah 4[6] julus maiman[at manu]s (struck at Surat in the 46th year of the prosperous reign); trace of star to left. Richly toned. In NGC encapsulation 6381622-055, graded MS 61. Ex Robert P. Puddester Collection; F. Pridmore Collection (Part II, Glendining, 18 October 1982), lot 526 (erroneously illustrated as lot 527); H. M. Lingford Collection; Dr. A.N. Brushfield Collection (Part V, Glendining, 2 November 1949), lot 3." Prior to the introduction of milled coinage in 1835, the East India Company struck imitations of local designs, including this one modeled on a Mughal panchia. After annexing Surat in 1800, the mint there was transferred to Bombay. The panchia was one third of a mohur.
