Sincona sale 69, lot 1293

This specimen was lot 1293 in Sincona sale 69 (Zürich, May 2021), where it sold for 14,000 CHF (about US$18,581 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"CZECHYA | Böhmen. Karl IV. (I.), 1346-1378. Dukat o. J. Kuttenberg. +KAROLVS:D-EI:GRACIA Bärtiges Brustbild mit geschlossenem Mantel von vorne, die Krone reicht bis zur Umschrift. Rv. +ROMANORVM:ET.BOEMIE.REX Doppelschwänziger Löwe links. Sehr selten. Gutes sehr schön. Leicht gewellt. (kingdom of Bohemia, Charles IV, 1346-78, undated ducat, Kuttenberg mint. Very rare, Good very fine, Slightly wavy flan.)"

Friedberg lists this as a goldgulden. In the fourteenth century, the goldgulden, florin and ducat were the same weight and fineness. Later, the goldgulden and the florin shrank while the ducat (or zecchino) maintained its weight.
