Steve Album sale 54, lot 709

This specimen was lot 709 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "BINDRABAN: AR rupee, Mu'minabad Bindraban, AH119Ø year 24, in the name of Shah Alam II, with scimitar & trident on the reverse, choice XF, R." While the auctioneers dated this "AH119Ø", we're calling it AH 1196 to match the regnal year 24. The coin has the date "١١٩" visible with the final digit missing. This rupee was struck in the name of the Mughal emperor at the Bindraban mint during years 22-24 and 27. Varieties with a slightly different mintmark are noted for year 37. The Marathas operated over thirty mints in India at this time but it is not clear if they were responsible for this issue.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 10.7-11.6 g, silver, this specimen 11.11 g.

Catalog reference: KM-10.1.
