This specimen was lot 77022 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2025), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "FRANCE. Besancon. Taler, 1658. Besancon Mint. Free City (in the name of Charles I). PCGS VF-35." Altho today Besançon is part of France, being the chief city of the Franche-Comte, in 1658 it was part of the Holy Roman Empire. It was incorporated into France in 1678. French coins struck there bear the mintmark "CC". This type was struck 1658-75 to commemorate the centenary of the death of Emperor Charles V.
