Bermuda 1973 cent
This specimen was lot 73408 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "BERMUDA. Cent, 1973. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Red Gold Shield. Another exemplary offering alluding to the "hogge money" popular with collectors of colonial Americana, this blazing Gem is fully red and intensely original. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This type was struck 1970-85 to the module of a United States cent. All dates are common in all grades as many were saved by sunburned tourists. The mintage seems out of proportion to the population (c. 52,000 in 1970, c. 63,000 today). Proofs were made in 1970 and 1983.
Recorded mintage: 2,144,000.
Specification: 3.11 g, bronze, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-15.
