This specimen was lot 30087 in Heritage sale 3035 (Long Beach, September 2014), where it sold for $2,232.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George III Proof Penny 1793 PR64 Brown NGC, London mint, A choice example, with reflective surfaces and attractive chocolate color. The original Proof issue with 'F. Droz' on shoulder and from a reported mintage of only 50 pieces." This design is known struck in silver, gold, pewter and aluminum (which wasn't known in 1793), suggesting that the dies were used to make restrikes for many decades after the original design was retired.
Recorded mintage: 72,000 originals plus many restrikes.
Specification: copper.
