Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale, lot 73401
SB621-73401r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73401 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELIZE. 50 Cents, 1989. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Steely gray with brilliant, radiating luster, this Gem offering presents great eye appeal and stands as one of the finest graded in the PCGS census. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." This specimen is one of a type struck for Belize 1974-76, 1979-80, 1989-93, likely at London or Ottawa. Simultaneous with this circulation issue, the Franklin Mint was striking proofs of an entirely different design featuring the frigate bird. These were packaged in sets with the other denominations and mass-marketed to collectors in the United States, making them more familiar than the regular issue, which is rather drab.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 9.07 g, copper-nickel, 27.7 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-37.
