Jean Elsen sale 136, lot 1169

This specimen was lot 1169 in Jean Elsen sale 136 (Brussels, March 2018), where it sold for €80 (about US$118 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"BELGIQUE, Royaume, Léopold Ier (1831-1865), Cu 5 centimes, 1858. Avec croix sur la couronne. Petits coups au revers. Superbe. (kingdom of Belgium, Leopold I, 1831-65, copper five centimes of 1858, with cross on crown. Small rim nicks on the reverse, extremely fine.)"

In 1861, the type was replaced with a copper-nickel five centimes of smaller diameter.

Recorded mintage: 2,712,000 for all varieties, a common date.

Specification: 9.8 g, bronze or copper, 28.3 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Bogaert 607B, KM 5.1 (with dot in signature) or KM 5.3 (large S in CENTS).
