This coin was issued 1957-60 in the last years of the Belgian colonial regime in the Congo and Ruanda-Urundi. Ruanda-Urundi, now the nations of Rwanda and Burundi, was administered separately from the Belgian Congo as they were United Nations trust territories, being fomer German colonies. Other denominations included a fifty centimes and five francs, also struck in aluminum. An oil palm is featured on the reverse.
