This specimen was lot 3627 in Stephen Album sale 38 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2020), where it sold for $166.60. The catalog description[1] noted, "BELGIAN CONGO: Léopold III, 1934-1950, 2 francs, 1943, elephant left, NGC graded MS63. WINGS. This type was struck at the Philadelphia Mint but had a mistake in the legend: "Belgish" instead of "Belgisch" and was rapidly replaced by a round type struck in Pretoria." The bold design of a striding African elephant has always made this coin popular among collectors who otherwise neglect African issues. The design also appears on brass one, two and five franc pieces of 1944-49.
Recorded mintage: 25,000,000.
Specification: 5.90 g, brass, 25 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-25.
