Sincona sale 87, lot 3035

This specimen was lot 3035 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it sold for 1,700 CHF (about US$2,289 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"RDR / ÖSTERREICH Batthyani, Fürstentum, Karl Josef, 1764-1772. 1/2 Konventionstaler 1770, Wien. Selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. Feine Patina. (principality of Batthyani, Charles Joseph, 1764-72, half convention thaler of 1770, Vienna mint. Rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Nicely toned.)"

"Count Károly József Batthyány of Németújvár (Hungarian: németújvári gróf Batthyány Károly József, Károly József Batthyány, German: Karl Josef Graf Batthyány, Croatian: Karlo Josip grof Baćan; 28 April 1697, Rohonc – 15 April 1772, Vienna) was a Hungarian general and field marshal. He served as ban (viceroy) of Croatia from 1743 to 1756."

He was one of several Austrian aristocrats granted the right to strike coins. In 1770, he struck a half thaler (shown here) and a ducat.
