Sincona sale 98, lot 4044

This specimen was lot 4044 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 3,750 CHF (about US$5,440 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Vierteldukat o. J. (um 1770), Basel. Zurückblickender Basilisk nach links mit ovalem Wappen. Unten das Münzzeichen H (Handmann). Rv. Wertangabe und Stadtname in drei Zeilen. Selten. Vorzüglich. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, undated quarter ducat, circa 1770, Basel mint. Obverse: A basilisk facing left with an oval coat of arms, mint mark H (Handmann) below. The reverse shows the value and the city name in three lines. Rare, Extremely Fine.)"

A similar quarter ducat with a hexalobe reverse was struck around 1750 (KM 156). A half ducat (KM 176) also exists.

Specification: 0.87 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 0.83 g.
