Basel (15)83 guldenthaler
This specimen was lot 2533 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 1,300 CHF (about US$1,560 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND, Basel, Stadt und Kanton Basel, Guldentaler 1583. Sehr selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. (city and canton of Basel, gulden thaler of 1583. Very rare in this condition, Extremely fine.)"
The guldenthaler was sixty kreuzer which, in the early part of the sixteenth century, was equal to a thaler. In the later part of the sixteenth century, the thaler rose to 72 kreuzer, making the guldenthaler 5/6 of a thaler. Later, in the seventeenth century, the thaler rose to ninety kreuzer, making the gulden (the "thaler" part of the name was dropped) two-thirds of a thaler. The 60 kreuzer was the same coin.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver; this specimen 24.14 g.
