Basel (15)73 1/2 guldenthaler
This specimen was lot 4033 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$416 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Basel, Stadt und Kanton, Halber Guldentaler 1573, Basel. Sehr selten. Schön. Korrodiert. Exemplar der Auktion SINCONA 51, Zürich, Oktober 2018, Los 4013. (Switzerland, canton of Basel, half gulden thaler of 1573, Basel mint. Very rare, Fine, Corroded.)"
This type was struck 1566, 1571-73, 1576, 1581, 1584 and undated. Tho marked thirty kreuzer, it is universally catalogued as a half guldenthaler. Later, in the seventeenth century, the thaler rose to ninety kreuzer, making the gulden (the "thaler" part of the name was dropped) two-thirds of a thaler.
