Basel (1438) goldgulden Fr-5
This specimen was lot 3074 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,258 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SWITZERLAND | Basel | Reichsmünzstätte Basel, Interregnum (1438). Goldgulden o. J. (1438), Basel. MONET ° NO BASILIEN' Madonna mit Christuskind. Rv. MONETA : NO'° BASILIENSIS + Reichsapfel im Spitzdreipass. Sehr selten. Schön-sehr schön. (city of Basel, imperial mint, interregnum of 1438, undated goldgulden, Basel mint. Obverse: Madonna and Child; reverse: imperial orb in trilobe. Very rare, Fine-very fine.)"
The preceding (Fr-4, for the emperor Sigismund) and succeeding (Fr-6, for Albert II) types are fairly available but this interregnal type is rare.
