Azores (1871) 20 reis
The first specimen was lot 32460 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portuguese Colony Counterstamped 20 Reis ND (1871) AU. Crowned counterstamp upon Portugal 10 Reis 1830. Little visible wear with a strong strike of both the counterstamp and the host coin." The second specimen was lot 32461 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $564. The catalog description[1] noted, "Portuguese Colony Crown Counterstamp ND (1871) UNC. The Crown counterstamp is upon an Angola 1/2 Macuta 1848. Both the counterstamp and host coin are choice UNC. An unheard of grade for the type." These c/m found on ten réis thru 1200 réis, on Portuguese and Brazilian coins and Maria Theresia thalers.
