This specimen was lot 70151 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $2,040. The catalog description[1] noted, "AZERBAIJAN. 100 Manat, 1996. NGC PROOF-67 Ultra Cameo. Struck for the 500th Anniversary of Mehemmed Fuzuli. A lovely Proof with hard mirrored fields and frosted cameo devices." Azerbaijan, on the Caspian side of the Caucasus mountains, obtained her independence during the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1989-91. A festering conflict with Armenia over various enclaves has prevented her integration with the world community. This NCLT was accompanied by a silver fifty manat (KM 5).
