Steve Album sale 54, lot 2210

This specimen was lot 2210 in Steve Album Auction 54 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2026), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "ALWAR: Wajid Ali Shah, 1847-1856, AR rupee, Lucknow, AH1270 year 7, NGC graded MS62." This coin was struck for Awadh, not Alwar. It is noted for years 5 thru 10. Wikipedia comments, "Mirza Wajid Ali Shah (Urdu: واجد علی شاه) (1822-87) was the eleventh and last King of Awadh, holding the position for 9 years, from 13 February 1847 to 11 February 1856." He was deposed and his domain annexed by the East India Company. Resentment of this and other acts led to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was centered at Awadh's capital Lucknow.
