This specimen was lot 71800 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it sold for $288. The catalog description[1] noted, "INDIA. Awadh. Rupee, AH 1269 Year 6 (1857/8). Lucknow Mint. Wajid Ali Khan. NGC MS-64. A boldly struck and lustrous near-Gem example with lustrous surfaces and good definition of the devices the surfaces displaying light attractive tone offering good eye appeal." This type was struck AH 1267-1272. A succession dispute in Awadh resulted in British intervention and overlordship. Resentment of this and other acts led to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was centered at Awadh's capital Lucknow.
