Awadh AH 1235(1) mohur Fr-1009
This specimen was lot 3308 in Goldberg sale 85 (Los Angeles, June 2015), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "India: Awadh. Mohur, AH1235/1. Ghazi-un-Din Haidar, 1819-1827. NGC graded MS-63." This product of the Lucknow mint is listed for AH 1235 thru AH 1242. Friedberg lists this coin as a mohur, the gold version of the rupee. Ghazi ud-Din Haidar, promoted himself from nawab to king with British connivance, setting aside the nominal suzerainty of the Mogul emperor. Later, a succession dispute resulted in British intervention and overlordship. Resentment of this and other acts led to the Indian Mutiny of 1857, which was centered at Awadh's capital Lucknow.
