Avignon 1608 1/2 franc KM-12
This specimen was lot 2019 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €2,200 (about US$2,965 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN, KIRCHENSTAAT/VATIKAN, Paul V. 1605-1621. 1/2 Franco 1608, Avignon. Von großer Seltenheit. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Auktion Crédit de la Bourse, Paris 1994, Nr. 87. (Papal States, Paul V, 1605-21, half franc of 1608, Avignon mint. Very rare.)"
Berman lists this type struck in southern France for 1609 and 1617-18. The popes held Avignon and the county of Venaissin until the French Revolution, when it was forcibly annexed to France.
