Sincona sale 4, lot 5312

This specimen was lot 5312 in Sincona sale 4 (Zürich, October 2011), where it sold for 280 CHF (about US$372 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ÖSTERREICH Franz Joseph I. 1848-1916 Dukat 1887. Fast FDC. (Austria, Francis Joseph I, 1848-1916, ducat of 1887. Nice uncirculated.)"

This type was struck 1872-1915 and is common. The 1915 has been restruck and is readily available for its bullion value. No mintmark appears on this type. Gold ducats were struck throughout Franz Josef's long reign and come in many types.

Recorded mintage: 223,000.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, .110 troy oz AGW, 19.8 mm diameter, this specimen 3,48 g.
