Austria 1509 2 guldiner Dav-LS282A
This specimen was lot 31085 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $6,600. The catalog description[1] noted, "Austria. Maximilian I (1493-1519) 2 Guldiner 1509 XF45 NGC, Hall mint. By Ulrich Ursentaler. Variety without rosette before horse. A piece which easily inspires today as much as it surely was intended to when first produced over 500 years ago. The first multiple 'taler' produced under the House of Habsburg, and for nothing less than Maximilian's acceptance of the imperial title, the type could certainly be counted as Ursentaler's magnum opus and a masterpiece of propaganda; reportedly the figure of the emperor on horseback was meant to correspond to a large statue in Augsburg which was, however, never completed. One of only four originals (indicated by the lack of the rosette before the horse of the later Antwerp strikings) that we have been able to locate coming to auction in recent years, and the only certified example by NGC to-date. Ex. Künker Auction 110 (March 2006, Lot 3567)."
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 60.78 g.
