This specimen was part of lot 40412 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Penny, 1956. Perth Mint. NGC PROOF-63 RB. Mintage of only 417 pieces." None of the proof pennies of the fifties are common but this one, along with the 1955 proof from Perth, is the key. The Melbourne mint also issued proofs.
Recorded mintage: 12,121,000 plus 417 proofs.
