Australia 1943-S florin
This specimen was lot 72502 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $168. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Florin, 1943-S. San Francisco Mint. George VI. NGC MS-65. Tied for the finest certified example of the type. An attractive Gem with satin luster under an impressive orange/brown toning." This type was struck at the Melbourne mint 1938-45 with help from the San Francisco mint 1942-44. Australia maintained the sterling silver standard until 1945, years after Great Britain had debased her coins to 0.500 fine.
Recorded mintage: 11,000,000, a common date, plus 22,440,000 from Melbourne.
Specification: 11.31 g, 0.925 fine silver, .336 troy oz ASW, 28.5 mm diameter, reeded edge, designed by T. H. Paget and George Kruger Gray.
