Australia 1939 6 pence
This specimen was lot 30371 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "George VI 6 Pence 1939-(M) MS65 PCGS, Melbourne mint. The undisputed key date from this ephemeral series, featuring blast-white surfaces that are sheathed in a satin-like finish and design imagery that is fully-bold and intricately styled. Essentially pristine and somewhat choice for the assigned grade." This type was struck for Australia 1938-45. The 1943-D is the most common date but the 1939 is expensive in high grade. The sixpence was reduced to 0.500 fine for 1946-63. In 1966, Australia converted to the dollar and silver was no longer coined for circulation.
