Australia 1857-S 1/2 sovereign
This specimen was lot 1016 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Australien, Victoria, 1837-1901. 1/2 Sovereign 1857, Sydney. Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Kleiner Randfehler. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, half sovereign of 1857, Sydney mint. Rare, Fine-very fine, Minor edge flaw.)"
This type, bearing the portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a banksia wreath, was struck at the Sydney mint 1857-70. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920.
Recorded mintage: 537,000 + proofs.
Specification: 3.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.88 g.
