Sincona sale 59, lot 1016

This specimen was lot 1016 in Sincona sale 59 (Zürich, October 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"Australien, Victoria, 1837-1901. 1/2 Sovereign 1857, Sydney. Selten. Schön-sehr schön. Kleiner Randfehler. (Australia, Victoria, 1837-1901, half sovereign of 1857, Sydney mint. Rare, Fine-very fine, Minor edge flaw.)"

This type, bearing the portrait of Queen Victoria wearing a banksia wreath, was struck at the Sydney mint 1857-70. The total issue was in the millions yet the type is scarce today, especially in nice condition. The Sydney mint was opened in 1855 to strike the gold found in Australia and was not employed to strike ordinary circulation coinage until 1920.
