Assam (Ahom Kingdom) began striking coins based on the rupee system in the 1600's. The design elements were borrowed from nearby Cooch Behar, but the octagonal shape was an invention of the Assamese. Two scripts, both Assamese and Ahom, were used for the reign of Chakrahvaja Simha. A frozen date of SE 1585 (1663 AD) was used on the Assamese types, with Year 15 (1585 SE) used on the Ahom types to commemorate the king's coronation. The shown type is in the Assamese script dated SE 1585. Saka Era (SE) dates are 78 years earlier than current year dates in Western countries. This is the first Assamese ruler to place his name on the coins as well as the coronation date.
