This specimen features the portrait of national hero José de San Martin, liberator of Argentina, Chile and Peru from Spanish rule, who died in exile in 1850. This type, struck 1950, is the first of several subtypes struck during the fifties featuring his portrait. It is common in all grades.

Recorded mintage: 3,460,000.

Specification: copper-nickel, 17 mm diameter, designed by Mario Baiardi.
