This type superseded Oudiné's portrait of liberty, used on the five centavos from 1896 to 1942, when the rising price of nickel forced the Argentine government to switch to aluminum bronze. The reverse pays tribute to two of Argentina's major products, wheat and beef. Similar designs were used on the contemporary ten and twenty centavos. The last five centavos piece was struck in 1959.
