Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2511

This specimen was lot 2511 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $96. The catalog description[1] noted, "ARAKAN: Bodawpaya, 1784-1819, AR tanka, BE1146, bold strike, some stain on one side (removable), XF-AU." The kingdom of Arakan formed on the coast of Burma facing the Bay of Bengal. A local dynasty ruled 1430-1638. The area fell under Mughal influence until 1784, when it was conquered by the Konbaungs of Burma. Bodawpaya (b. 1745, r. 1782-1819) was the sixth king of Burma and conqueror of Arakan. The coins are dated using the Chulasakarat calendar. Varieties exist: KM 28.1 (Inscription within cord borders), KM 28.2 (Inscription within segmented dotted border), KM 28.3 (Inscription within beaded circle), KM 29 (Inscription, no border, shown here) and KM 30 (Inscription within corded border).
