Aquileia (1412-20) soldo
This specimen was lot 56780 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Aquileia. Denaro, ND (1412-20). Ludovico II di Teck. PCGS MS-63." This soldo or denaro was issued by Louis of Teck, the last patriarch of Aquileia to hold any temporal power. He embroiled his state in a war between the German empire and the republic of Venice and saw his seat captured and sacked by the Venetians in 1419. He attempted to recapture Aquileia in 1422 and 1431 but was repulsed. He died in Basel in 1439, a bitter enemy of pope Eugenius IV. Subsequent holders of the see were strictly bishops, subject to Venice. The obverse states, "+ LODOVICVS ° DVX ° D ° TECh" and the reverse, "PATHE - AQVILE".
