This type was struck 1971-72 for the Portuguese colony of Angola on the west coast of Africa south of the Congo. The 1971 issue shown here is not expensive but is seldom seen for such a cheap coin. After a protracted struggle, Angola obtained its independence in 1975 and then dissolved into civil war as various factions contended for control.

Recorded mintage: 2,000,000.

Specification: 12 g, copper-nickel, 30 mm diameter.
