Angola 1860 macuta
This specimen was lot 72103 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $132. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. Macuta, 1860. Pedro V. NGC AU-58. Virtually Mint State quality with a sharp strike and glossy, deep brown surfaces. A superb example for the assigned grade!" The Portuguese landed in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory. This type was accompanied by KM 58 (half macuta).
