Angola 1762 2 macutas
The Portuguese landed in Angola in 1491 and immediately made the region a major slaving station, which trade would not end until the 1850's when the British Royal Navy interdicted the trade. The later nineteenth century was devoted to resource extraction and fending off attempts by the other colonizing powers to seize territory. This specimen was lot 35207 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2022), where it sold for $120. The catalog description[1] noted, "ANGOLA. 2 Macutas, 1762. Jose I. PCGS VF-30." This type was struck in silver 1762-63. Some copper one macutas of 1762 were later countermarked to raise their value to two macutas; these are quite scarce.
