This specimen was lot 39003 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Ancona. Grosso, ND (1210-1330). PCGS AU-50." Ancona, an Italian port on the Adriatic Sea, was a part of the Byzantine empire in the early middle ages but obtained her independence as Byzantine control loosened after AD 1000. With the aid of a large Jewish community, she competed with Venice for trade with the Levant. In 1532, Clement VII conquered the city and added it to the Papal States, where she remained until Italian unification in 1859-61.
