American National Bank of Pomona, California
large size $5
This specimen was lot 20342 in Heritage auction 3574 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $10,200. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Unique NB of Pomona $5 Brown Back, Pomona, CA - $5 1882 Brown Back Fr. 472 The NB of Pomona Ch. # (P)4663 PMG Choice Very Fine 35 EPQ. A lovely note from this scarce Los Angeles County bank that is one of just two pieces reported that bears this charter's first title which appeared on its notes from just 1891 until 1904. It represents a title that eluded all of the most dedicated California collectors including Charley Colver and Lowell Horwedel and it is also the only $5 Brown Back in the census from here. It is a bright, well margined note with pleasing color, clear pen signatures, and original surfaces. With the other known note with this title, a $20 Brown Back in a PMG Very Fine 25 holder, selling in our 2017 Long Beach auction for $7,800, this clearly superior piece should do a bit better. From the Norris Turner Collection."
large size $10, date back
This specimen was lot 20343 in Heritage auction 3574 (Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $2,640. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Pomona, CA - $10 1882 Date Back Fr. 545 The American NB Ch. # (P)4663 PMG Very Fine 30. A scarce early note from this sought after Los Angeles County location. It is one of only two 1882 Date Backs known from this institution and the only $10. Featuring even wear and great color, this pretty note has been off the market since we sold it as part of the Charley Colver collection in 1999. In our 2018 FUN auction, we sold the only known $20 Date Back in a PMG Very Fine 25 holder for $3,840. From the Norris Turner Collection."
large size $10, plain back
This specimen was lot 18022 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $1,150. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pomona, CA - $10 1902 Plain Back Fr. 628 The American NB Ch. # (P)4663. A nice note which traces its pedigree to the Krakover collection sale, although Lowell did not obtain it until several years later. It sold in Krakover for $577.50, and again in 1997 for $660. In a much stronger market today, this pretty Fine-Very Fine specimen should now reach or exceed... Ex-CAA's January, 1997 sale, lot 3341, formerly from the Philip Krakover collection sale, lot 364."
large size $20, brown back
This specimen was lot 20285 in Heritage auction 3557 (Long Beach, CA, September 2017), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Newly Reported Pomona $20 Brown Back. Pomona, CA - $20 1882 Brown Back Fr. 498 The NB of Pomona Ch. # (P)4663. A wonderful new discovery from this scarce Los Angeles County bank that is only the second note to be reported that bears this charter's first title which appeared on its notes from just 1891 until 1904. It represents a title that eluded all of the most dedicated California collectors including Charley Colver and Lowell Horwedel and it is also the first $20 Brown Back to surface. It is a bright, well margined note with pleasing color and clear pen signatures. PMG has noted a couple of small edge tears, but they are not readily discernible. With the other known note with this title, a $5 Brown Back in Very Fine, selling at auction four years ago for $11,500, our estimate for this pretty PMG Very Fine 25, may well prove conservative."
This specimen was subsequently lot 21140 in Heritage auction 3576 (the Norris Turner collection, Orlando, FL, January 2020), where it did not sell.
large size $20, date back
This specimen was lot 18021 in Heritage auction 354 (the Horwedel sale, Long Beach, CA, September 2004), where it sold for $5,290. The catalog description[1] noted, "Pomona, CA - $20 1882 Date Back Fr. 555 The American NB Ch. # (P)4663. This is one of only two Second Charter examples from Pomona's other and considerably scarcer issuing bank, which liquidated in early 1926. Fine-Very Fine. Obtained from John Heleva in 2000." This specimen was subsequently lot 20344 in Heritage auction 3574 (Norris Turner collection, Long Beach, CA, September 2019), where it sold for $2,040.
