Algeria AH 1242 2 budju
This specimen was lot 76395 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "ALGERIA. 2 Budju, AH 1242 (1826/27). Algiers Mint. Mahmud II. NGC EF-45. This appealing and only lightly handled specimen offers good eye appeal, with nice details and a deep tone throughout." Algeria, nominally subject to the Ottoman empire since the sixteenth century, survived on piracy. This eventually became unacceptable to the seafaring powers, who looked on while France invaded and conquered the region in the 1840's. The French found the interior tribesmen extremely obstreperous as had the previous regime, and never succeeded in imposing obedience. This type was struck AH 1236-1244 during the final years of independence.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 19.5-20.0 g, silver, 38 mm diameter.
