Afghanistan AH(116)2/2 rupee KM-693
This specimen was lot 2169 in Steve Album Auction 55 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2026), where it sold for $228. The catalog description[1] noted, "DURRANI: Ahmad Shah, 1747-1772, AR rupee, Peshawar, AH(116)2 year 2, rare early Durrani issue from Peshawar, choice XF, R." This type was struck years 1-26, and is listed in the SCWC as common. Peshawar was seized by Nadir Shah from the Mughals in 1738. It fell to the Durranis in 1747 and to the Marathas in 1758. It was traded between the Afghans, the Mughals and the Sikhs over the next century until finally claimed by the British in 1868, after the Mutiny. Wikipedia comments, "The Durrani Empire (Pashto: د درانيانو ټولواکمني), also called the Sadozai Kingdom and the Afghan Empire, was founded and built by Ahmad Shah Abdali in parts of Central Asia, Middle East and South Asia. At its maximum extent, the empire ruled over the modern-day countries of Afghanistan and Pakistan, as well as parts of northeastern and southeastern Iran, eastern Turkmenistan, and northwestern India."
