United States 1847 cent

from the Mountain Groan Collection

This type was struck 1839-57 in substantial quantities 1839-57 at the Philadelphia mint. The introduction of steam machinery to the mint in the 1830's meant that this type is better and more evenly struck than its predecessors. It is the last type of large cent issued before the conversion to the familiar small cent in 1857, which meant that large quantities were saved in all grades, tho the handsome design looks good even in circulated condition.
