Monaco 1879 20 francs rev Heritage 3019-25161.jpg

This specimen was lot 25172 in Heritage sale 3019 (Chicago, April 2012), where it sold for $1,265. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles III gold 20 Francs 1879A, MS64 NGC, a choice piece with full mint brilliance and excellent eye appeal. Very scarce in this superior designation." This date is the scarcest of a type struck in Paris 1878-79, allegedly for use in the prince's newly opened casino in Monte Carlo. The coin matches the specification of the contemporary French twenty francs.

Recorded mintage: 50,000.

Specification: 6.45 g, .900 fine gold, 0.186 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: KM 98.
