Nicaragua 1987 5 centavos rev DSLR.jpg

This one year type is common in all grades. Nicaragua, never prosperous, suffered severely in the earthquake of 1972 and the subsequent incompetent and corrupt response by the Somoza regime. In 1979, the Somozas were overthrown by the Sandinistas, an event which led to the notorious Iran-Contra affair. This coin, issued by the Sandinistas, was accompanied by ten, twenty-five, 50 centavos, one and five cordobas.

Recorded mintage: 38,000,000.

Specification: 0.75 g, aluminum, 15 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM 55.
