This specimen was issued by the Madagascar as part of the F.A.O. series. Madagascar, off the coast of Africa in the Indian Ocean, is nearly large enough to count as a subcontinent. The plants and animals living there are generally found nowhere else. The island was under French rule 1886-1960. The reverse features a local cutting peat for fuel.

Recorded mintage: 8,001,000 plus 3,800 proofs in silver.
